I came across “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” on Netflix last night while hunting for something to watch. It’s from 2008 and won a couple awards. I figured why not, and hit play.
It’s the story of an 8 year old boy named Bruno who is the son of a high ranking officer in the Nazi army. His work means that the family has to move, so Bruno along with his mother, father, and sister go to a new home. Bruno quickly realizes that there is a “farm” not far from their home and all the farmers there wear pajamas. He begins sneaking out to go to the edge of the farm because there he met and befriended another 8 year old boy. His father has a teacher brought in for him and his sister since there are no schools nearby and the teacher only teaches one thing: Jews are bad. The sister embraces this teaching because there is a young soldier staying on the property that she’s taken a liking to. Bruno isn’t as eager to accept it. The story progresses with the mother realizing the truth of her husbands work and Bruno also learning more about the farmers.
It’s a heartbreaking story but also a very good one. As the story unfolded, I knew where it was leading but the ending still had me in complete shock. It’s the sort of movie that sticks with you longer than most. I recommend it to those who haven’t seen it yet.
